Within 20 minutes from the B&B over the hills and through olive groves, sunflower oceans, and crawling vineyards, lays a medieval walled city where debonaire Italians scuttle around the cobblestone streets. Streets whose orientation have remained the same since their use as the first major thoroughfare of the united Umbrian region - predating the Roman Empire. Four quadrants of the town are based on the medieval, labor-intensive processes of fabric paper making, paint mixing and producing, silk spinning, and candle pouring. The piece de resistance is a 3rd century B.C. waterwheel which has remained intact in part due to a very wealthy merchant who originally preserved the space as a wine cellar after having served as the lifeblood of an 8000 person Roman theatre. Though many of the original structures were torn down and reconstituted as Christian churches, Bevagna has the unique history of original, not reconstructed, stone structures. With the immense weight of 2000+ years throbbing...a glimpse through the space/time continuum...
I anticipate everyday the descriptive journey you take us all on. I feel the warmth of the sun across the oceans even though here the night is bathed in darkness I feel the cobblestone beneath my feet, though my feet are placed on fake pergo flooring, I smell the aged wood and the dampness, though really the smells surrounding me are dad's grilling..... Ancora una volta il mio viaggio fino a noi caro!
